" Totally Joe" is about teaching tolerance and diversity because it reveals that everyone can be different in their own ways and hold back from saying things that will hurt. Many school districts have decided to remove this novel because of the homosexuality content contained throughout the story and it was also seen as a " portrayal of the bullying Christian family" (Ilene Cooper). When the book was finally out, many opinions from the readers were either harsh or supportive, based on how they perceived the children's book. As "Totally Joe" was released in 2005 as the sequel to the novel "The Misfits," James Howe knew that it might cause a turning point in his career.
